As this year’s 2025 Hall of Fame Award Honoree, Mr. Ralph Lauren shared his insights into the world of Ralph Lauren fragrances.

When you launched Ralph Lauren fragrances in 1978, it was the first time that a designer had launched scents for men and women at the same time. Why did you make that decision, and what impact did it have?

My world encompassed both men and women and so when I decided to create fragrances, it seemed natural that I would launch Polo for men and Lauren for women. Each scent was developed to celebrate the individuality of each. The packaging was as distinctive as the fragrances.

Over the years, there have been more than 100 Ralph Lauren fragrance launches. Which scents have been your favorites?

Asking me to pick my favorite scent would be like asking me to choose my favorite child. Each one is special to me and each fragrance is about a moment in time, a mood whether sport, adventure or romance. Since 1978, I’ve created a world of fragrances to celebrate and complement the way women and men choose to live from year to year, season to season, day to night.

From packaging to advertisements, the visual imprint for Ralph Lauren fragrances has always been distinctive and unique to the brand. What is the key to presenting a cohesive and impactful Ralph Lauren world?

It’s always about one thing—Emotion.

From your perspective, what is the relationship between fashion and fragrance? How are they similar and dissimilar?

Fashion and fragrance both celebrate the spirit of the person that wears them. They are about self-expression and individuality. And they offer a kind of confidence to the woman or man that wears them. For some it’s one personal scent that exudes the spirit of the person. For others it’s a wardrobe of fragrances that match a mood or experience. What I do is about living and fragrance is a personal part of all the ways we choose to live.
